The CUSP-3 series accelerographs are targeted towards strong-motion studies and structural monitoring applications.
They utilise state-of-the-art industrial-standard technologies in a modular system, resulting in an
unprecidented level of performance, simplicity and flexibility at a cost-effective price.
For free-field applications, the CUSP-3 series are the first instruments to allow dense networks to also be low-cost and high peformance.
For structure monitoring applications, the multi-sensor varients, with low-cost Ethernet wiring, allow rapid installation, and an unmatched cost effectiveness.
Highlights
Advanced Communications
CUSP-3 series utilise modular, industry-standard processors with native Internet connectivity. The use
of a standard systems allows a wide range of communications modules
to be incorporated in addition to the standard 100Mbit LAN interface. Examples include
PSTN Modems, Cable Modems, Cellular Modems (GPRS/CDMA), Bluetooth/IEEE809.11(WIFI) wireless modules
etc. The CUSP-3 series use TCP/IP communications for high-reliability data transfers and the user
interface is based on a standard HTTP web server with secure SSL 128bit data encryption.
Sensors
The CUSP-3 series use triaxial MEMs sensors (Piezo or capacitive) with an advanced calibration system and
signal processing routine to ensure data fidelity. Particular attention has been given to cross axis
sensitivity and data linearity over the recorded bandwidth. External sensor options feature digitisation
at the sensor to improve noise immunity and can be adapted to LDVT displacement, wind or borehole sensors, as
well as geophones.
User Interface
The CUSP-3 user interface is based on the Apache web server. Extensive use of CGI scripting
allows interaction with the system. Security is addressed via a user authentication scheme and
the use of SSL data encryption. Two user modes are permitted: one giving access to
data and diagnostics only; the second provides administrator logon allowing full instrument
configuration. Users can configure all parameters of the system including communications,
recording parameters, offset adjustments, data retrieval and delete, diagnostics log access,
comminations logs etc. A novel feature is JAVA based data streaming allowing viewing of the
system output in real-time. SSH administration is provided for advanced applications, also
allowing encrypted RSYNC data transfers.
Accurate Timing
GPS timing is used for system timing with a hardware real-time clock backup system.
Additionally, Internet based timing (NTP) can be utilised for a low cost alternative for low-tolerance /
low-cost applications. For building monitoring, existing LAN wiring can be used to route time
information from the roof to the instrument.
Long Product Lifetime
The CUSP-3 instruments were developed for a 20-year product lifetime. This is reflected by the
use of the industry standard processors, TCP/IP connectivity and the Linux OS.
