ICEARRAY

The fault is probably associated with one (or more)of the moderate (up to and around M6)
earthquakes that have occurred in the region, which is part of the South Iceland Seismic
Zone, with the last events happening in 1706 and 1766. The fault was discovered when
digging the foundation for the new municipal service centre and office building, which was
originally planned as a 5 story building but after discovering the fault they reduced the design
to just the ground floor. The part of the fault that lies under the building is visible through
a glass floor. (text after Benedikt Halldorsson).
